“As you know, on January 11, Salvadoran police arrested five prominent water and human rights defenders from the community of Santa Marta in northern El Salvador: Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Antonio Pacheco, and Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega.
The arrests have generated widespread international opposition, including an
international statement signed by over 250 organizations in 29 countries, including your own, and show the crude reality of life under dictatorship in El Salvador today.
Given your concern for this situation, we are writing with another
urgent call to solidarity and to ask that you and/or your organization
DONATE to support the legal and other expenses of the El Salvador 5. For U.S. based organizations,
use this link to make a tax-deductible contribution or see below for information on how to send a check. For organizations in other counties, see below for how to donate via PayPal and other options.
— Background –
Community organizations in Santa Marta and throughout Cabañas were at the forefront of the successful fight to pass, in 2017, the first law in the world that prohibits metallic mining.
Without evidence, the government has accused these individuals of involvement with a murder that occurred over 30 years ago in the context of the civil war, though the government has taken no action to pursue charges against those who committed massacres and other crimes against humanity against the community of Santa Marta.
Read a translation of the community’s statement here.
With these arrests, the Bukele government is trying to make the social movements in El Salvador cower into submission, and, environmental defenders fear, pave the way toward reversing the mining ban.
We cannot let that happen.
The community is strong and has widespread support across the social movement in El Salvador. But there is an
urgent need for financial support to fight for their immediate release, and to ensure that the community can continue their critical organizing work.
For organizations based in the United States: The CISPES Education Fund, a 501c3 organization, is accepting donations
here.
Please DONATE generously to help us meet an immediate goal of raising $20,000 for legal and related expenses. Every donation will go directly to El Salvador.
If you’d prefer to write a check, please send that to CISPES Education Fund, 1525 Newton St. NW, Washington, DC 20010 and put Santa Marta in the memo.
For organizations based outside of the United States, feel free to use the CISPES Education Fund’s charitable portal on PayPal and put Santa Marta in the memo:

In the coming weeks, their legal team will be fighting to get them
released from pre-trial detention, which the judge ordered for at least six months, despite their advanced age and several having medical conditions that need ongoing attention. They are currently being held in isolation in a judicial detention center; visits from family members and medical providers have been denied.
Donate today to help the El Salvador 5 get back to their community and to show collective, international resistance to political persecution.
