Position Statements

January 12, 2010

We, the undersigned workers, artists, intellectuals, and human rights groups strongly condemn the widespread human rights atrocities against the Honduran people, beginning with the military coup on June 28th of 2009. Reports from human rights organizations emerge every day detailing state repression, from rape to assassination, of members of the non-violent resistance, whose aim is to restore constitutional order to their country and foster the creation of a more just society.

September 30th, 2009 Public statement against the violation of human rights in Honduras On September 28, 2009 the member organizations of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC) and its allies, including Doctors for Global Health, declared:

 • We renew our condemnation, in the strongest of terms, of the coup d'état in Honduras, and demand the restoration of constitutional order and the reinstatement of President Manuel Zelaya.

Dear Lawmaker:
We write to urge you not to miss using health reform as the opportunity to eliminate barriers that legal immigrants currently have to coverage in Medicaid, CHIP, and Medicare. Thank you for all of your efforts to achieve the critical reforms needed in health care. We share your goal of expanding the number of individuals who have quality, affordable health insurance and reducing the number of uninsured in America.

Doctors for Global Health (DGH) adds its voice with those around the world in denouncing the air strikes on Gaza conducted by Israel in recent days that continue to this day.

While it is clear that rocket fire by Hamas militants against civilians should be ended because it does not help end the occupation and is also illegal under international law, Israel's response represents collective punishment on the entire Gaza population, clearly in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Letter of Accompaniment to the People of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldive Islands, Somalia, Sumatra, Bangladesh and Burma, and to members of The People's Health Movement, from the Board of Directors, Doctors for Global Health:

"At least seven bodies were scattered outside the convention center, a makeshift staging area for those rescued from rooftops, attics and highways. The sidewalks were packed with people without food, water or medical care, and with no sign of law enforcement. An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered up by a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet."
